PLAYING WITH PAINTSTIKS
1/2 DAY WORKSHOP
Remember when you were in kindergarten, and you put a leaf or penny under a piece of paper, then rubbed the crayon on top of the paper? An image of the leaf or penny magically appeared on the sheet. That's exactly the idea with Shiva Oil Painstik rubbings. Students will create their own unique embellished fabrics using Painstiks with batik stamps and a variety of other materials. The completed fabric will be completely washable and colorfast.
Fee: $350.00 Includes use of Instructors complete supply of Painstiks, extensive collection of copper batik stamps and other materials for making rubbings.
GUILD PROGRAM
PaintStik Rubbings with Batik Stamps
Textile Design combining the very old with the very new
A Hands-on Program for Guilds

Shiva paintstiks are a wonderfully simple fabric-coloring medium. They look like big chunky crayons but are actually a mixture of oil and wax that becomes permanent on fabric when heat set. They are colorfast and fully washable once fixed.
We have found that the copper tjaps used to stamp fabric with wax in the batik process are ideally suited to making rubbings on fabric with the paintstiks. They are fun and easy to use.
You will have the opportunity to try out this exciting new embellishment technique.
Fee: $250.00 plus supplies
LECTURE: Batik Textile Traditions of Indonesia
1 hour lecture with trunk show
Indonesia is a country rich in textiles. Nowhere else in the world has the art of batik been brought to such a high level of refinement. In this presentation I will show examples of Indonesian batik from my own collection of both antique and modern pieces. I will talk about the cultural importance of batik in Indonesian society, demonstrate the techniques of producing batik, and discuss ways of using batik in quilting for both quilts and wall hangings.
There will be batik panels, and a variety of Indonesian textiles available for sale.
FEE: $250.00

~ About Trish Hodge ~
Trish Hodge has been making quilts for over thirty-five years. Trish has enjoyed the good fortune of combining her three great passions, textiles, travel, and teaching. She has taught quilting to students from age 6 to 60.
After winning a prize from Quilters Newsletter in 1973, for her pieced camel wall-hanging she opened a Quilting business in Eugene, Oregon called Patchwork Camel. For fifteen years she designed and sold a great variety of patchwork items, from potholders to quilted clothing to full sized quilts. She closed this business when she accepted an overseas teaching assignment.
She has lived in Tunisia, Syria and most recently, Indonesia where she studied and collected textiles and incorporated the motifs into her own work. She took full advantage of her recent five years of residence in Sumatra to intensively investigate Indonesian batik, culminating with her master’s degree thesis, Indonesian Batik Design: Transmitter of Culture. She has taken instruction from Paksi, a batik master in Jogyakarta where she worked side by side with his batik artisans.
Trish has extended and enriched her palette as a textile artist by employing batik fabrics in her recent quilts. She uses her respect for the deep cultural significance of batik motifs to contribute meaning in her creations beyond the aesthetic qualities of color and design.
